Training Session Held At Chestnut Hill College To Help Treat Trauma In Children Of Military Members

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A special training session was held at Chestnut Hill College to help treat trauma in children of military members.

Sister Nancy DeCeasare Ph.D., associate professor of Human Services as Chestnut Hill College, says the specialized training session was geared towards mental health professionals.

"And we are educating community based clinicians that are volunteers with The Soldiers Project that help families and children of the military."

Dr. Kelly Landman says the first step is to identify trauma.

"Which could look like avoidance, hyper-arousal, inattention."

When do these behaviors appear?

"Before deployments, during deployments, after deployments, between deployments and any combination of those."

Dr. Landman says there has been an increase in the need for these childhood therapeutic services in the past decade or so.

"In particular, since the beginning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So we do see increased rates from 2003 and on."
