David Molk: 'I Can't Discredit What Chip Calls'

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- With the Eagles down five points with the ball, 3rd and goal on the SF 1-yard line, Chip Kelly called two straight passing plays. Both of which failed and the Eagles lost the game, their first loss of the season.

The Eagles struggled running the ball, rushing 12 times for a putrid 22 yards in the game. Still, with only 54-inches to go, many criticized Kelly for not running the ball at least once. Was it crazy to run the ball there?

"I couldn't say you're crazy [for wanting to run there], but at the same time I can't discredit what Chip calls because technically he has done this for so long and you know, with what he sees during the game you really can't discredit with what he calls," Eagles center David Molk told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Wednesday.

"You can anticipate a little bit, but at the same time I don't call plays," Molk said. "I've never called plays and I think if you were to say what would you do, you wouldn't want my opinion anyway."

The Eagles offensive line was missing its starting center Jason Kelce, its starting right tackle Lane Johnson, and its starting Pro Bowl left guard Evan Mathis. Molk, however, gave credit to the 49ers defense when asked about the Eagles ground-game issues.

"You know really I think it's what they did to us throughout the game," Molk explained on Wednesday. "They played some bases, dropped a safety in, they played an eight-man box and that's tough. That's tough to run against and you know, this year isn't last year. And the way that kind of teams work is they see what we've done well and this team ran really well last year. And so they adjusted, they moved their chess piece and now it's our turn to figure out how to adapt and really ignite this thing again."

Molk was a 2011 consensus All-American at Michigan and the San Diego Chargers' seventh round draft pick in 2012. He's fought his way to make the Eagles roster and on Sunday, playing for the injured and talented Kelce, Molk made his first career NFL start. On Wednesday he called it "one of the best accomplishments of my life so far."

As for his future with the Eagles, Molk told Cataldi, "You know it's the NFL, your guess is as good as mine."
