Philadelphia's 8th Graders Consider High School Options

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - For Philadelphia's 8th graders it's a somewhat scary time...a time to learn about high schools - neighborhood, charter and special admissions - visit schools and make choices for admission next year. Students may apply to 5 District schools and there is no limit on charters.

Applications will be available on the School District's website from October 17th- December 12th when they're due and families should visit the High School Expo, Friday, October 17th, 3-5pm and Saturday, October 18th, 9am-3pm, at the Armory at Drexel University, 33rd and Market Streets.

Applications must be submitted online and computers will be available at all branches of the Free Library, the District's eight regional resource centers, its headquarters and 51 key spots in recreation and community centers.

Start by getting a copy of the Notebook fall guide at any Library branch for schools' racial demographics, academic achievement, additional activities, transportation and other factors that will help in decision making.
