Join Elderly Relative For Doctor's Visit

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you have a relative who is a senior citizen, one of the best things you can do for them is to go with them to a doctor's appointment.

There are several reasons.

The first has to do with some differences in how people treat the doctor visit. Most young people are more aggressive and ask numerous questions about their health. It engages the doctor in conversation.

The second reason has to do with remembering information. It's always good to have a second person around to communicate and remember small details like changes in medication or dosages.

It's important to know what an elderly relative is doing and taking part is a great way to help out.

Take some time for a meal or a snack after the appointment and it can be a great social visit for the senior in your life.
