Seth Joyner: 'Cary Williams Just Signed His Pink Slip'

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Former Eagles linebacker Seth Joyner knows a thing or two about working hard in the NFL, and as you would expect, he's not too fond of Cary Williams' recent comments complaining about the Eagles harsh practice regimen.

In fact, Joyner says the comments will eventually cost Williams his spot on the team.

"Listen, I'm saying it right now," Joyner told Michael Barkann and Ike Reese Tuesday on the 94WIP Mike & Ike Show. "Mark it down, write it down somewhere because we'll be talking about it in February. He just signed his pink slip man. Because when you become disgruntled and you voice it under Chip Kelly, he ain't having it. Why is DeSean [Jackson] gone? Running his mouth, not being a team player. He's [Williams] a high-salary cap player, got a high-salary number, and I don't see the production there."

Joyner, a three-time Pro Bowl linebacker and former Super Bowl champion, was an eighth round Eagles draft in 1986. Joyner, who played 11 seasons in the NFL, was actually cut during training camp before re-signing with the Eagles. He has a message for Williams and his questionable work ethic.

"Let me just put it to you like this," Joyner continued about Williams. "First off, the Collective Bargaining Agreement is set up in a way where you don't even practice the way we used to practice, OK? We used to go two a days in the summer time, full gear both practices all out half-line, nine on seven live. If the guy don't get tackled, run the play again, OK? Stop your complaining, OK? Because the Collective Bargaining Agreement is set up to protect players so players aren't working as hard. Now, Chip Kelly comes out and says, well he didn't even go on Wednesday and Thursday last week. What are you complaining about man? Shut your mouth."

The timing of Williams' comments was odd, coming right an impressive 37-34 win over the Redskins. Williams' individual play on the field likely triggered the comments, as he gave up an 81-yard-touchdown to DeSean Jackson.

"He couldn't cover DeSean on a great day," Joyner said. "Now that's on the side, but come on your team is 3-0. The worst thing you need to do is open your mouth and create controversy about, 'Are we practicing too hard? 'Are we practicing too long?' He better be glad it ain't Buddy [Ryan]. Buddy would have made us go full gear for complaining, you know, just because of him. And then you turn around, you're 3-0, what is it you're trying to do?
