Tractor Trailer Crash Creates Traffic Nightmare Along I-95

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, a tractor-trailer headed south on I-95 overturned near Bridge Street.

The driver of the tractor was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital. As a result of the crash, a large amount of trash spilled on the highway.

I-95 UPDATE: 10:30am

The tractor trailer was removed the scene and the clean-up was slowly inching towards being complete. However, traffic was still slowed with only one southbound lane and two northbound lanes getting by.

I-95 UPDATE: 8:40am

Major backups remain on I-95 in both directions. Side streets and alternate routes are experiencing heavy volume as well, especially South on the Roosevelt Boulevard, which is jammed from Oxford Circle to the Schuykill Expressway.

Southbound I-95 is still jammed from Academy down to Bridge Street, and northbound I-95 is backed up from Allegheny Ave to Bridge Street.

I-95 UPDATE: 6:35am

A crane/wrecker has uprighted the tractor trailer, which is still sitting on the damaged guard rail of I-95.

Progress is being made on the cleanup, though there is still a significant amount of trash littered on the highway.

Traffic is jammed southbound from Academy down to Bridge Street, and Northbound I-95 is backed up from the Betsy Ross Bridge to Bridge Street.

I-95 UPDATE: 5:25am

The tractor-trailer is still on its side. It tipped over in the southbound lanes, but it is overturned partially in the northbound lane as well.

ALTERNATE ROUTE - from the CBSPhilly Traffic Center: If you're looking for a few ways to avoid the overturned truck accident on 95 SB at Bridge St., there are a few ways to get around the incident. Heading out of Northeast Philadelphia toward Center City? Stay on SB Rt. 1 and continue down to Aramingo Avenue and access I-95 or stay on Rt. 1 SB and make your way to 76 EB.

I-95 UPDATE: 5:13am

There is lots of debris scattered all over the roadway. Only one lane is getting by in each direction. I-95 northbound is getting by a little faster than I-95 southbound, but if you're not already on the road, look for alternate routes.

Fuel and trash are scattered on I-95, clean up has been minimal so far.

I-95 UPDATE: 4:55am

The full-sized tractor-trailer carrying trash is laying on its side in the roadway. There is also a diesel fuel spill on the roadway.

The two left lanes in both directions are closed, and southbound traffic is starting to back up.

If you're heading into work, try to get an early start or find a different way in this morning.

I-95 UPDATE: 4:30am

The two left lanes of I-95 near Bridge Street are closed in both directions. So far, only minor delays are being reported due to low traffic volume. Traffic is getting by in both directions.

The tractor-trailer is still flipped over and trash is spilled on the roadway.

 

ADDITIONAL ACCIDENT - Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension:

In a second, unrelated traffic incident, another tractor-trailer is overturned on the southbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension about four miles south of Quakertown.

The right lane is closed southbound on the NE Extension, the left lane is getting by. There's a several mile backup on the Turnpike.

Officials say the truck will stay where it is until it is offloaded. They expect to be working on the truck until around 2pm. Avoid getting on the Northeast Extension of the Turnpike south at Quakertown.
