Plant Trees And Shrubs Now

By Phran Novelli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you've been thinking about planting a tree, putting in some shrubs, or rejuvenating old garden beds with something new, now's the time to do it.

Even though it's fun to buy plants in the spring, when so many trees and shrubs flirt with you by being in bloom, Fall is a much better time to put things in the ground. The soil is still warm enough now to dig, and plants have time to get their roots established before winter.

Autumn rains and winter snows water plants for you. And since most plants go dormant this time of year, they're not distracted by making flowers or fruit, and deciduous plants have no leaves to dry them out.

In short, planting in the fall gives shrubs and trees three seasons to get established before they have to endure a hot summer. Whereas, if you wait until spring to plant, your plants will be stressed by summer heat within weeks!

So go get some trees and shrubs and get planting. NOW!
