Del Val's Chris Smallwood Rushes For Over 200 Yards And Six Touchdowns

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Delaware Valley College has had a lot of great performances on the football field over the years. But on Saturday in Doylestown, fans of the Division III Aggies saw one of the best ever as senior running back Chris Smallwood led Del Val to a 54-35 win over Middle Atlantic Conference rival Wilkes.

Smallwood, an Upper Moreland High School product, rushed for 213 yards on just 20 carries and he set a program record with six rushing touchdowns.

"It was a lot of fun," Smallwood tells KYW Newsradio about his record-breaking performance. "I'm just happy that we got the win and all my teammates could celebrate with me and just get the win for Coach (Duke) Greco."

The previous Del Val record for rushing touchdowns in a game was four and overall touchdowns was five.

Smallwood's scoring runs went for 49, 1, 5, 42, 34 and 37 yards. He says he really wasn't aware of just how big a day he had until he looked at the numbers postgame.

"I was surprised afterwards," Smallwood says. "Because early on, we were going back and forth with Wilkes. It was a tough game, so really I was just worried about trying to do my job and make sure we win this game."

This is Smallwood's first season as the starting running back for the Aggies, and while his performance grabbed the headlines, he says he couldn't have done what he did on Saturday without his teammates.

"The line, they blocked perfectly," Smallwood says. "We worked very hard during the week, we had some extra time because we had the bye week. Everyone worked extra hard to know their job, know their assignments and it all came together during the game. And it just made my job that much easier. All I had to do was make the right reads and just go. Just run."

Smallwood now has rushed for 274 yards this season for the 2-0 Aggies. He says his record-breaking performance still seems a bit surreal, but it is also no longer his focus.

"It still hasn't hit me yet," Smallwood says. "Right now I'm just worried about going to the next game, we got (Lebanon Valley), and we're just focusing on them right now. Keep our streak going and get this MAC championship."

Delaware Valley College will visit Lebanon Valley College Saturday at 1:00pm.
