PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – “Don’t speak to me until I’ve had my coffee.”

It’s an oft-used phrase in the newsroom, so it comes as no surprise that a recent survey finds journalists and media professionals are the world’s top consumers of coffee.

In a survey of 10,000 people conducted by U.K. company Pressat, 85% reported drinking at least three cups of coffee a day, with 70% saying it improved their ability to work.

It also seems coffee is particularly necessary in what Pressat deems “stressful careers,” such as law enforcement and journalism, where most workers reported drinking four cups or more each day.

According to Pressat, these professions are the top coffee consumers:

1. Journalists and media staff
2. Police officers
3. Teachers
4. Plumbers and trade workers
5. Nurses and medical staff
6. Company executives
7. Telesales
8. IT technical support
9. Retail staff
10. Drivers

While journalism is clearly not the world’s most stressful career (we’ll leave the real stress to brain surgeons and air traffic controllers), journalists do work long and very often odd hours, so the results make sense on some level.

Another takeaway from the survey? Men drink more coffee than women, though only about 5% more.
