Where did you get your degree?

"I received my B.A. in psychology from Bucknell University. I got my doctorate (Psy.D.) at Widener University. The Psy.D. is similar to the Ph.D. - the difference is that the Psy.D. (doctor of psychology) is focused on clinical work rather than psychological research."

Can you describe your duties as a psychologist?

"I work on the inpatient psychiatry unit at Bryn Mawr Hospital. I run the dual diagnosis (mental health diagnosis in addition to substance abuse issues) program. I also have an outpatient private practice where I work with individuals and couples on issues of anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. I also run a women's divorce social support group which is aimed at helping women to meet new friends during and after divorce."

How has your education prepared you for your career in psychology and social sciences?

"My education taught me to ask the right questions. It also taught me to use critical thinking and remain curious and open-minded to different points of view. My doctorate took me six years to complete so I'd also have to say that it taught me about patience."

What advice would you give someone who is pursuing a career in psychology?

"It's important to examine your motivation to become a psychologist. Helping others with their problems requires a strong dedication to your own well-being. Make sure that you have built a strong, happy foundation for yourself before you attempt to teach others how to make positive decisions."
