Week-Long Activities Lead Up To Peace Day In Philadelphia

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A week of activities leads up to next Sunday's Peace Day, being commemorated in Philadelphia and around the world.

Peace Day, as established by the United Nations, is September 21. In Philadelphia there's a week of lectures, service projects and concerts leading up to next Sunday.

Peace Day Philly coordinator Lisa Parker says one way everyone can take part is through an act of peace.

"It can be something very simple -- helping a stranger, reaching out to someone that you feel might need a chat or help in some way."

Parker says on Independence Mall next Sunday at noon, there will be a global minute of silent reflection.

"It's in every time zone. So it's actually a peace wave that moves across the world."

She says the goal of Peace Day is to create relationships that can foster peace well beyond September 21st.
