The Right Dose Of Dark Chocolate
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There have been numerous reports that chocolate may reduce blood pressure and the risk of heart disease. The most interesting research found that those who reported eating an average of one small square of chocolate a day, that's a quarter of an ounce, had lower blood pressure and a 39% lower risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
The scientists concluded that chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, may help prevent heart disease, but only if it replaces other snacks so that one's weight does not increase.
I enjoy studies like this and they get a great deal of attention but the overwhelming message is moderation.
A small amount of chocolate may have a protective effect but not large amounts.
