PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The fatal stabbing of a Philadelphia school teacher inside a South Philadelphia hotel is now being investigated as a suicide.

Police say the 48-year-old woman was found inside the women's restroom of the Holiday Inn on Packer Avenue, just after 8 a.m. She was suffering from multiple stabs wounds to the arms, neck and breast.

The victim was rushed the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and rushed into surgery. She was later pronounced dead just after 3:30 this afternoon.

Police say a pair of scissors and steak knife were recovered from the scene.

The Philadelphia School District has confirmed that the victim is a sixth grade teacher at Key Elementary School. District spokesman Fernando Gallard says the victim was a long time member of the school staff, having worked there for 20-years.

Gallard says counselors will be on hand at the school in the morning to offer help to staff and students.

Gallard also wanted to tell parents that this tragedy was in no way connected to the school.
