Gov. Christie: No More Permanent Alimony In NJ
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — There will be no more permanent alimony in future divorces in New Jersey.
Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill Wednesday overhauling part of the state's divorce settlement law.
The measure had bipartisan support, but Christie previously publicly wondered whether it went far enough.
Under the change, alimony for marriages lasting less than 20 years would be paid no longer than the duration of the marriage.
It could also be ended when the person making the payments retires or loses a job, or if the person receiving the support starts living with someone else.
The new limits would not apply to divorce settlements that have already been agreed to.
