Young Siblings Struck By Pickup Truck In Parkwood
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A brother and sister are hospitalized after police say they were struck by a pickup truck in Northeast Philadelphia.
It happened around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday at Academy and Byberry Roads in Parkwood.
Police say a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Byberry Road at Academy Road with the green light. While making a left turn onto northbound Academy Road, police say the truck struck two children, a 10-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy, that were walking westbound crossing Academy Road in the crosswalk.
Witnesses tell Eyewitness News they saw the siblings fly several feet in the air.
Stephanie Rodzwic ran to the little boy after the collision. She says, "His eyes kept closing and he kept yelling 'I want to get up!' I'm just really concerned for them."
The kids were rushed to Aria-Torresdale Hospital in critical condition. They were then taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children for additional treatment.
Police confirm the female driver remained at the scene and it does appear she will not be charged.
"It appears at this time that there were no laws violated. The 20-year-old driver of the 2003 Dodge Ram remained on scene and doesn't appear to be under the influence of alcohol or narcotics," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Police say the children are students at Decatur Elementary.
