PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Pennsylvania Ballet has cleaned house, firing several staffers earlier this week. The move came days after the arrival of new artistic director Angel Corella.

Interim Executive Director David Gray says among the changes are the replacement of the ballet masters and school director, and the elimination of several other positions:

“We needed to save some money, and also make some changes in staffing to fulfill the artistic vision that Angel brings to the organization.”

Gray says the people moving into the artistic positions are Pennsylvania Ballet insiders:

“They have a great combination of organizational history, but also the kind of energy and outlook and experience that I think Angel really values.”

According to Gray, the changes will allow the ballet to expand its horizons:

“It’s gonna be a company that will be on the national dance scene in a very big way. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it will happen.”
