Without further ado, here's The Poobah.
Phil E. Phan: Ruben Amaro Jr. was trying to justify a longer look at Dom Brown the other day, saying that some players take longer to develop, using Mike Schmidt as an example. What was the Poobah's reaction?
Poobah: Shock! If the general manager can't evaluate Dom Brown by now, it is time to find a new general manager. Brown gave the Phillies six weeks of sizzle last year, followed by six months of mediocrity. Sure, he has come up through the Phillies' lackluster farm system and was once regarded as untouchable, so Amaro is loyal to the guy in a self-serving way. Mike Schmidt is the greatest third baseman to ever play the game, and mentioning him in the same analogy as Brown is dumber than dirt.
Schmidt did struggle his rookie season, hitting .196. The next season he hit .282 with 36 homers. The fans didn't boo Schmidt until he had established his credentials and then under-achieved in some clutch situations. They thought he was too cool because his uniform was so clean and crisp. Amaro should know better, but maybe he has developed vertigo looking up at the standings from last place. Schmidt can fire back during Sunday's telecast, but will probably take the high ground.
