CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) — Campbell’s Soup is putting out “Just Peachy” salsa for the third straight year. But it’s not meant to benefit the company’s bottom line. Rather, it’s a fundraising effort for the Food Bank of South Jersey.
Campbell’s takes peaches that are too small or damaged and produces the salsa, which is bottled, labeled and boxed up by some 200 company volunteers at their R&D facility in Camden.
From there it goes to the food bank for sale in 20 different locations throughout South Jersey.
Tom Sims is the charity’s chief development officer.
“It helps a lot of folks who are in need right here in South Jersey, who are indeed working poor, families, children, seniors, just through the sales,” he said. “But on top of that, it tastes great and it tastes great over chicken.
Sales topped $90,000 last year with profits staying with the food bank. New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno took time out to tour the R&D plant where the salsa’s made.
She also highlighted Campbells’ role, which includes volunteer work by some 200 employees.
“What you have done is figured out a way to take peaches that may not otherwise be usable and turn them into a money making project for the Food Bank,” she said.
