Do More For Skin Than Use Sunscreen

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - As we get into the teeth of the summer season, it is very easy to notice the sun beating overhead. Most of us are aware that wearing sunblock is protective for our skin and there is no doubt that the warm temperatures and risk of sunburn help us keep this in focus. But many people forget that it is important to protect the skin from the sun's dangerous rays by wearing block all year long.

Other tips to keep skin in tip top shape include healthy eating and physical activity.

Some tips: enjoy plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially ones that help safeguard your skin, such as pomegranate and adding whole grains and low-fat dairy into your diet can make a big difference as well.

As for exercise, it improves blood flow, which helps move key nutrients and oxygen to the surface of your skin. And sweating works to remove dirt from your pores.

You should aim for one hour of physical activity that gets you breathing hard every day.
