Delaware State Trooper Shot, Suspect Killed During Shootout Identified

By Steve Beck and Kristina Dougherty

MAGNOLIA, Del. (CBS) -- A suspect was killed and a State Trooper is hospitalized following an exchange of gunfire in Delaware early Wednesday morning.

Police say the Trooper, identified as 26-year-old Corporal Lloyd McMann, attempted to conduct a vehicle stop. The driver, Dennis Hicks, disregarded the attempted and fled northbound on SR 1 and headed towards Magnolia. Hick's vehicle then came to a complete stop in the area of Bayhill  Road and West Birdie Land.

Hicks then exited his vehicle with a semiautomatic handgun and opened fire. McMann returned fire, striking Hicks in the upper body.

During the exchange of gunfire, McMann suffered gunshot wounds to his hand and face. He was transported by Troopers to the Bayhealth Kent General Hospital and later transferred by Delaware State Police Aviation Helicopter to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center. He was admitted in serious but stable condition.

Hicks, 29, was transported to the Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 8:47 a.m.

Authorities say the semiautomatic handgun was recovered and a preliminary investigation determined that it was reported stolen from a residential burglary in Smyrna in June of 2013.

Corporal McCann, a 4-year veteran of the Delaware State Police, has been placed on administrative leave as per Divisional Policy, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police say an investigation is ongoing.
