Hear Philly: The Shore Thing - Jeep Invasion, Ms. New Jersey Crowned and July Jubilee In June

By Andrew Kramer

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) - The June fun in Ocean City starts even before the first full weekend.

Michele Gillian with the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce says Wonder Bear, the mascot of the famous Wonderland Pier, will be celebrating a very special occasion:

"Wonder's Birthday Bash is held at Wonderland Pier. Everybody gets to ride the rides for two tickets, and then at 9 o'clock there's a fireworks display. This is on a Thursday night that kicks off the boardwalk season for family nights."

The party begins at 6 p.m. on June 5th.

The following week, one of Ocean City's new signature events gets underway Wednesday, June 11th:

"The Ms. New Jersey Pageant begins with the girls coming in and going to the different hotels and motels," Gillian explains. "Then we have preliminaries during the week, we have a wonderful parade on the Ocean City boardwalk, and then Saturday, Ms. New Jersey's crowned."

Also that week, jeeps cruise into Ocean City just in time for Father's Day weekend.

"This is our second annual jeep invasion," says Gillian. "We begin it on Friday night downtown where we have all the jeeps line up and we have some bands and entertainment that people can stroll and look at the jeeps."

Gillians adds that Saturday, the jeeps go up on the boardwalk for display and remain there for the day, but that's not all:

"We are also going to have a fireworks display that evening to celebrate our jeep invasion and Father's Day."

Last year over 200 jeeps took over the boardwalk with more expected this time around. The invasion begins June 13th.

It may only be June, but beginning on the 23rd, Gillian says July Jubilee rounds out the month to get folks geared up for one of the biggest weekends of the summer:

"July Jubilee is the week before Fourth of July, and it's a celebration throughout the city. We do events on the Ocean City boardwalk as well as downtown and at 34th Street."

She says it's a week full of activities for the young ones:

"It's for children to come and do scavenger hunts or T-shirt contests, taffy sculpting, those kinds of events so children can get into the season a little bit earlier and have lots of fun on the boardwalk and downtown."

And right in the heart of July Jubilee, it's FUNday at Playland, where Gillian says a $15 wristband gets you "four hours unlimited rides and two miniature golf courses, so there's lot's going on."

Gillian adds the event, taking place at Playland's Castaway Cove beginning at 1 p.m. on June 25th, is for a great cause:

"This is to help provide innovative services for housing and employment for low-income individuals and their families."
