Dr. Ben Carson On Running For President: 'I Would Have To Consider It'

By Chris Stigall

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Chris Stigall spoke with Dr. Ben Carson on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT. Carson is the author of a new book, One Nation: What We All Can Do to Save America's Future.

Carson said that living in a democracy requires an engaged citizenry.

"Freedom is not free. It can only be maintained by people who are active. The go-along to get-along attitude that we have today is threatening to our freedom. We have to be willing to stand up for what we believe, not be afraid of an IRS audit or that someone is going to call you a name or even that you job may be in jeopardy. Because, if the people that had preceded us had gone along with that attitude, where would we be today?"

He demurred when asked about speculation that he is considering running for President.

"It's not something I want to do after a very arduous career in neurosurgery; I was looking for some relaxation in my life. But as I travel around the country, a lot of people feel that I need to do something. I don't know if it's so much me that they want as they want some common sense. Preferably somebody would come along who offered all those things, who engendered a lot of excitement and then I could get behind them and push them, but if it doesn't happen than certainly, I would have to consider it."

Carson compared the problems facing the Department of Veterans Affairs with bigger problems confronting the nation.

"It is a top heavy organization with a lot of bureaucracy that keeps things from happening. We simply don't need that kind of bureaucracy in virtually anything that we're doing today. We're problem solvers or at least we used to be, very innovative people. That's being depressed by the kinds of policies that we've put in place now. We need to unleash the potential of the American people."
