Union Beats Sporting Kansas City 2-1

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Cristian Maidana capped a quick back-and-forth scoring sequence with his first goal of the season, and the Philadelphia Union broke a nine-match winless streak with a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night.

Danny Cruz also scored for Philadelphia (2-5-5), which won for the first time since a 2-1 victory over New England on March 15. Sporting (5-3-2) missed a chance to assume the outright Eastern Conference lead.

Dom Dwyer scored in the 80th minute for Sporting, tying the score at 1-all, but Maidana answered in the 81st with his game-winner.

Cruz scored in the 49th minute on a putback of Maidana's saved shot.

Philadelphia had to play a man down in second-half stoppage time, after Corben Bone — who had entered the match only seconds earlier — was issued a straight red card for a serious foul on Sporting's Jacob Peterson.
