Police: 14-Year-Old Boy In Custody For Wig Shop Robbery, Beating

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police have arrested a 14-year-old suspect in the beating and robbery of a 67-year-old woman Tuesday morning inside a wig shop in the Wynnfield section of the city.

The 14-year-old was taken into custody Tuesday night after his mother called 911.

Police released video of the incident and a neighbor called the suspect's mother to let her know that her son may have been involved. The mother confronted the boy and he told her he did it. She brought him to Southwest Detectives where they say he gave a full written confession.

The beating and robbery happened Tuesday morning inside Judy Wigs near the corner of N. 54th and Berks Streets.

Police say it was a vicious attack. The 14-year-old is 5'10" and 250 pounds, he looks nearly twice the size of the 67-year-old he punched and kicked after knocking her to the ground (See Previous Story).

The store owner, Jung Ja Bang, says she is still  sore and recovering from the attack.  She now wears a bandage around her hand from being pushed into a glass case.

The suspect then repeatedly kicked and punched her while she was on the ground.

She says, "He said I want money and I said I will call police."

Surveillance video also shows the teen inside one week earlier. The owner tells us he grabbed $70 dollars from the register before he ran away.

The teen is now facing charges for both encounters at the store.

He is being charged as a juvenile with assault and robbery. Eyewitness News also learned from police he also has one prior arrest from September of last year for an assault on a teacher.

During the confession, he also said he took the woman's cell phone which he discarded in the area of Overbrook High School.

Police noted he is not a student there.
