Old City Shop To Celebrate Free Comic Book Day On Saturday

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Every first Saturday in May, since 2002, independent comic book shops mainly in North America have been giving away comic books.

KYW's John McDevitt stopped by one participating shop in Old City.

"There's Archie stuff, there a Street Fighter one based off the video game, Mega Mans."

Brian Johnson is a manager at Brave New Worlds Comics, Games, Toys along North Second Street.

He says Free Comic Book Day is to celebrate independent comic book shops and to promote reading.

"We love comics and people should know about comics and people should read comics, especially kids. It's kind of like hey kids don't play video games, don't watch movies, read something kind of thing. There's all sort of comics for kids specifically for the day," he said.

Johnson says a big part of the fun is when customers come dressed in costume.

"Dress up as your favorite heroes," Johnson said.
