Cost Of Attending A Wedding Rising

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Weddings can be expensive, not only for the bride and groom but for the guests. According to American Express, people are spending 10 percent more to attend a wedding this year compared to last year. On what are they spending their money?

"A gift, something to wear, and if it's in another city, travel, lodging."

And folks tell me the pressure to spend is increasing as couples spend more on their big day: "Or they do the destination thing and then you're expected to like show up -- especially if it's a family member, even more! You're expected to fly wherever you are and show up and spend all that money."

So as a guest, you have to make a decision when you get that invitation in the mail.

Reporter: "What's your first thought -- is it, 'I'm going' or is it 'no, it's going to cost a lot of money?"
"Oh no, I'm going. I love weddings."

But, not everyone feels that way: "You know, you wish more people would elope!"
