Sugarhouse Develops a New, Simplified Craps Game For Younger Players

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new table game based on craps is debuting at the Sugarhouse Casino, in Philadelphia.

The Fishtown casino is betting their new game will appeal to the younger gambler.

Its called "Props and Hops," a play on craps terms -- proposition and hop bets.

After the wagers are placed on individual or group numbers, the player shakes a metal cup with two dice inside.  It's turned over on the table and the lid is removed to reveal the winning -- or not winning -- combination.

The game was created and developed by two Sugarhouse casino employees, table games supervisor Mark Grochala (at left in photo) and dealer Tom McCann (center of photo).

McCann says the game could be used as an introduction to casino craps.

" A lot of people, especially the younger kids, are intimidated about craps," he notes.  "It can be complicated.  There's a lot of bets, and the game moves fast.  Here (with Props & Hops) you can take your time, and the dealer has time to explain why these bets do what they do on the craps table, so you can step into a craps table and have a little knowledge on how the game is played."

Props & Hops took two years to make it to the casino floor.  It will be at Sugarhouse exclusively till October 1st, then it could be leased out to other casinos.
