Atlantic City Man Sentenced For Shooting Two Men Over Sneakers

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) — An Atlantic City man convicted of shooting two men after they failed to turn over their sneakers during a robbery has been sentenced to nearly 39 years in prison.

Roger Howard must serve more than 31 years before he becomes eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Friday. He was convicted last month on numerous charges stemming from the October 2012 shooting, including two counts of attempted murder.

Atlantic County prosecutors say the 21-year-old Howard approached the men — then ages 18 and 19 — and demanded their shoes. When they refused and ran off, Howard opened fire and eventually took the shoes off of at least one victim.

Police found the victims when they responded to reports of shots fired. Both were treated for leg wounds.
