Chester Residents Voice Concerns About Violence, Investigation into Police Department

By Diana Rocco

CHESTER, Pa., (CBS) -- Outrage is growing over the Chester Police Department.

Residents frustrated with violence in the city voiced their concerns about an investigation into the department.

Dozens of angry community residents packed the Chester City Council meeting Wednesday forcing officials to move to a bigger room.

"Somebody asked you 'Is the city safe?' And your reply was yes. I'm going to make you a liar. City, are you safe?" a resident asked.

"No," yelled the crowd.

"Mayor Linder, I hope you heard that," the resident said.

"My son was killed two-thirty in the afternoon in front of many people. Two-thirty in the afternoon," another resident said.

"We had a whole lot of shootings and nobody's standing up.  But we still have the same police officers," said another resident.

Residents were responding to violence in their neighborhoods and on the streets.

This comes one day after investigators from the Delaware County Prosecutor's office serves a search warrant on the police department (See Previous Story).  Their focus was the evidence room. The mayor addressed the crowd about the investigation.

"I'm going to wait until that investigation is done. If I need to discipline any of those officers, they know that, white or black. If they did the wrong thing, and I have the opportunity to do it, I am certainly going to do it, without hesitation," Mayor of Chester John Linder said.

The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office has been tight-lipped about what exactly they were looking for at the Chester Police Department Tuesday. Those search warrants have been sealed.
