5,000 Quad-Sparing Knee Replacements Since 2003

A United States Postal Service worker, Charlie Layden delivers mail to 500 homes each day. At the end of his shift, Charlie changes his uniform for his job as a stadium usher, where he bolts up and down hundreds of stairs at every Phillies home game.

.
No one would guess that just a year ago, crushing knee pain forced Charlie to climb stairs on all fours. It was the result of years of accumulated stress from both work and play.
"I've always been athletic. I was a baseball catcher in high school and that took its toll," he says. "I stayed on a ball field until my 40s when I just couldn't play through the pain anymore."

.
Charlie was tired of missing the things he loved – including country line dancing – so his primary care physician recommended a specialist.
After meeting Virtua orthopedic surgeon Scott Schoifet, MD, Charlie learned he was a candidate for same-day total knee replacement. Dr. Schoifet pioneered a minimally invasive knee replacement surgery that aids in faster recovery.

.
"The minimally invasive, quad-sparing technique requires only a small incision. Because we don't cut the quadriceps tendon, patients have a significantly reduced recovery time. Charlie was able to go home the same day," explains Dr. Schoifet.

.
Charlie's new knee felt so good, he decided on a second knee replacement within the same year. At 62, Charlie says he still feels like a boy. "I want to keep up with my two young kids, and also provide for them. I'm doing that and much more. I added 75 more houses to my postal delivery route. My next activity, some country line dancing."

.
For knee replacements the quad-sparing way, call 1-855-VIRTUA-8 for an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon.
