Thousands Of Volunteers Take Part In Philly Spring Clean Up Day

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Thousands of Volunteers were sprucing up neighborhoods all over the city of Philadelphia on Saturday as part of the 7th annual Philly Spring Cleanup.

Debris was being cleared from vacant lots in places like 20th and Diamond Streets in North Philadelphia and in Spring Garden employees of Day and Zimmerman were cleaning up the neighborhood where they work.

"We are sweeping up every inch of the sidewalk and street and every piece of trash we see," said Liz Kane, "every cigarette butt, every bottle, you name it we are getting it."

"I take pride in my city," said Jay Kothari. "I clean up like this is better for all of us including my kids."

In other neighborhoods, places like playgrounds, vacant lots and streets were spruced up to make the city cleaner and safer for all.

The city would like to see the enthusiasm and pride of volunteers for Philly Spring Cleanup Day last all year round.
