New Castle Police Warn Residents Of Phone Scam

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS) – New Castle County Police are investigating a phone scam where the caller, who identifies themselves as law enforcement, attempts to collect money from victims for outstanding warrants or fines.

Police say they have received several reports from victims regarding phone calls from a man identifying himself as "Major Paul Stevens" from the New Castle County Warrant Division. The caller uses a 302 area code and leaves a message asking for a return call if there is no answer at the residence.

New Castle Police say these types of phone calls are being made across the county and they have seen this type of scam back in October.

Authorities are warning the public that a law enforcement agency will not call a resident requesting payment for a fine over the telephone.

If anyone has been a victim of this telephone scam or wants to inquire about the validity of a call from a law enforcement officer can call the New Castle County Police non-emergency telephone number at (302) 573-2800.
