Affordable Care Act (ACA) Key Dates
The new year means new parts of the health care reform law take effect.
With few exceptions, all American citizens are required to have health insurance from January 1, 2014. Citizens who do not have health insurance in 2014 will be assessed a fee.
The law does allow a three-month lapse in coverage during the year without penalty. This makes April 1, 2014 the actual date citizens must have a policy in place to avoid the fee.
Small business owners with fewer than 50 full-time employees are not required to offer health insurance. However, starting in 2014 many small businesses are being encouraged to provide it through health care tax credits.
Starting in 2014, insurers can no longer deny coverage for pre-existing conditions or set annual caps on essential health benefits.
