Del. Man Arrested For 4th DUI After Sideswiping Cop Car

HARRINGTON, Del. (CBS) – Delaware State Police say they've arrested a Harrington man for his fourth DUI after he crashed into the side of a police vehicle.

On Sunday morning around 1:35, an officer from the Harrington Police Department was parked on the southbound side of Railroad Avenue just north of the Commerce Street intersection.

Forty-seven-year-old Thomas J. Lepera was operating a 2005 Hyundai Sante Fe southbound on Railroad Avenue, and as he was passing the marked patrol car, the right side of the Sante Fe swiped the officer's car.

The Hyundai continued southbound before turning onto Commerce Street, where Lepera stopped after the Harrington officer put on his lights.

Police say Lepera was the lone occupant of the vehicle, which smelled like alcohol.

After an investigation, Lepera was taken into custody and taken back to police headquarters. There, officers discovered Lepera had three previous DUI convictions.

Lepera has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and careless driving. He is currently being held at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center of $4,025 secured bond.
