Good Reason To Learn Another Language
By Dr. Marciene Mattleman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Kids may wonder why a foreign language is mandated in most high schools. Why? Knowing another language introduces us to other cultures – their food, music, dances, literatures and ways of behaving. It helps us understand people from other backgrounds.
Research shows that knowing another language increases our cognitive abilities – analytic and interpretive capacities.
Students who study foreign languages tend to score better on standardized tests, particularly in the categories of math, reading and vocabulary, and improve on entrance exams, SATs, ACTs, GREs, MCATs and LSATs.
Three years of language study on your record will catch the eye of anyone reading your job, college, or graduate school application. Knowing another language enhances credentials. And think of the fun you'll have traveling.
