What's Cooking On 1060: Waffles, Wings, and… Tattoos!

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS) -- A "Top Chef" contestant has just opened his second restaurant.  Jason Cichonski (top photo), who also owns Ela in South Philly, competed in the TV series this season and was the second person to be eliminated.

(Kuznits:)  "Anything you want to say about that?"

(Cichonski:)  "Not that wouldn't make me sound like a sore loser."

His new restaurant, The Gaslight, is at 120 Market Street in Old City, at the location of the former Philadelphia Bar and Restaurant ("PBR").  Its grand opening is this coming Monday.

"We're taking casual food and just trying to elevate it a little bit," Cichonski tells What's Cooking.  "You know, really good sandwiches, a couple of playful takes on some chicken wings, a fun brunch."

It's been a year in the making, but the Foolish Waffles truck is getting ready to make its street debut!

Oo-owners Robin Admana and Flo Gardner had to change their marketing direction during the past year.  After getting some positive press coverage about their truck (see previous What's Cooking story), they received a cease-and-desist order from Waffles Frolic store, in Ithaca, NY.

They also had to get a new truck after it became clear that their initial vehicle (which they dubbed "The Big Green Monster") was not going to be able to pass inspection.

Now, inspection is scheduled for the end of the month and they expect to hit the road in March.

Gardner says they are eager to unleash their truck on the streets of Philadelphia:

"We have chicken and waffles, we have a falafel waffle..."

Meanwhile, Vice Coffee, at 1031 Spring Garden Street, offers customers coffee, food, books to read -- and more.

Owner Heather DeRussy-Collazo explains this is not your typical coffee shop.

"Vice is a coffee shop, but it is also going to be a tattoo studio.  And we have a selection of used books here as well."
