PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A couple of his former players are producing a TV documentary about Hall-of-Fame Temple basketball coach John Chaney.

First, LaMont Ferrell and Darrin Pearsall had to convince their former coach, John Chaney, that it was okay to do a documentary on his life.

“The main thing is we had to get Coach Chaney on board,” Ferrell said. “And if you know Coach Chaney, he’s not one to decide to do things pretty easily.”

The 82-year-old Chaney said no at first, but after months of talks he finally agreed. Ferrell says the documentary called “The Wise Old Owl” depicts how Chaney taught life on and off the court.

“He showed us and engaged us that there was more to life after basketball, and what were we going to do after the ball stopped bouncing?”

Ferrell, the executive producer, says he’d like to sell the film to ESPN or HBO Sports. He hopes to have the documentary finished by fall, with a premiere at the Liacouras Center.
