Social Media Today: Facebook Tests New Network, Snapchat’s Latest Security Woes

Facebook  has confirmed its testing a mobile-ad network that will allow a small number of advertisers to use Facebook’s infrastructure to place ads on other apps. The network could help Facebook increase its revenue without burdening Facebook users with too many ads.

“While we have run similar tests in the past, this current test is more like a mobile ad network in that we are working directly with a small number of advertisers and publishers rather than an outside ad-serving platform,” Facebook said in its blog post.

The limited announcement did not include any details on which apps would receive the ads. “The current test is limited to a few advertisers and partners, and we will share more details over the coming months,” Facebook said.


In an effort to beef up security, Snapchat rolled out a new verification system to help prevent hackers from creating fake users to  exploit Snapchat’s “find friends” database. When new users download the app and sign up for the service, they are now shown nine images and must select all of the images containing an image of the Snapchat ghost.

Unfortunately, a security researcher has already blogged  about hacking the new verification system.

In December, the company suffered a major security breach which exposed 4.6 million usernames and phone numbers and last week some users took to Twitter to express anger over increased spam.



Lionsgate has unveiled the first official movie poster for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” exclusively on Facebook . In less than 24 hours the post  has over 20,000 “likes.” The new poster is similar to the two previous movie posters, it shows a flaming image of the mocking jay pin worn by the film’s main character, “Katniss Everdeen” played by Jennifer Lawrence. The movie hits theaters in November.
