Los Angeles School Partners With Parents In Homeschooling

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There are about 2 million kids in the US being home-schooled and, since it's been said that a child's best teacher is his or her parent, there are many variations.

A unique charter school in Los Angeles, The DaVinci Innovation Academy, has connected families of 270 diverse home schoolers in an interesting arrangement. The Academy, in partnership with the Wiseburn School District, has developed an intensive parent-and-teacher professional development relationship. Parents participate in two days of training before the fall semester, planning programs for their kids.

Students attend in-school class two days weekly, Monday/ Thursday or Tuesday/Friday, with half day fee-based electives on Wednesdays, The rest of the time, parents work in partnership with teachers on the Common Core standards adopted by most states, and keep journals linking home and school instruction.

Parents are responsible for content, teachers for application.
