Extreme Cold Causes Damaging Pipe Burst At Deptford Apartment Complex

By Jenn Bernstein

DEPTFORD, N.J. (CBS) -- A group of residents at the Locust Grove Apartments in Deptford experienced an abrupt awakening Wednesday morning when a sprinkler system pipe burst.

Tawana Watson was sitting in bed, when she heard a pop.

"The dog started barking and started running towards the front door," said Watson.

She walked into her second bedroom and heard running water.

"I look over to the right at the vent, and water just starts pouring down the wall."

She immediately alerted the apartment complex.

Her neighbor downstairs also came up after the water found its way into his apartment.

They started moving her furniture and that's when the ceiling began to fall.

"In a matter of seconds, we were standing almost knee deep in water in my apartment," said Watson.

Management told Eyewitness News everyone had a place to stay Wednesday morning.

The Red Cross did assist one resident.

We're told the broken pipe is a direct result of the cold temperatures.
