Air Travelers Persevere; Some Even Manage To Depart PHL For Warmer Climes

By Tony Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There were nearly 160 flight cancellations this morning at Philadelphia International Airport, and arriving flights were delayed an average of about 3½ hours.

But many flights managed to depart on time -- which was bad news for would-be flyers trying to get to the airport.

Bill and Diane Robbins and their sons left plenty of time to make their flight this morning at PHL, until a crash ahead of them blocked their path to the airport.

Diane says they were southbound on I-95 when a truck accident closed the Girard Point Bridge (see related story).  And Bill says they sat there -- for three hours.

"We got in the truck jam about quarter of four (am).  Our flight was at 6:30," he told KYW Newsradio.

But, he notes, they made good use of that time.  As it became clear they would miss their original flight to Punta Cana, they booked another flight for later in the morning, and eventually they were on their way.
