'Winterfest' Set To Open At Penn's Landing River Rink

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- To celebrate the 20th Anniversary season of the River Rink along the Penn's Landing, a family friendly festival space called "Winterfest" has been created around the ice skating rink -- and it opens on Friday.

There's a wintergarden complete with evergreen trees, fire pits and a tented area where food and beverage stands are assembled. One of a kind crafts will be on sale for holiday gifts.

Delaware River Waterfront Corporation Spokeswoman Jodie Milkman says as soon as it gets dark, a light show gets underway.

"We have a really compelling exciting dynamic light show that will go off every hour on the hour starting at 5 o'clock (pm) all the way through 11 o'clock (pm)," he says. "The hours of Winterfest start at 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. every single day, November through January. So we are really excited to start celebrate the holiday season."

You don't have to ice skate, but if you do, you may run into someone you know.

"You are going to be able to skate with Santa," Milkman says. "Not sit on his lap, but skate with Santa every Saturday and Sunday in the weekends leading up to Christmas."

There will be a tree lighting on December 6th.
