Cuba Libre To Host Filipino Dinner To Raise Funds For Typhoon Victims

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Cuba Libre in Old City will be raising money for Filipino relief efforts on Monday with a special dinner.

Food writer Drew Lazor, who helped organize Monday's fundraiser at Cuba Libre, says for that one night only, the menu will be replaced with a four-course $35 Filipino menu.

"I'm definitely excited leading up into it. Obviously, that excitement is tempered by the fact that thousands upon thousands of people are really, really in need of our help," Lazor says.

For many, this will be a learning experience.

"Filipino food isn't really available in a ton of places in Philadelphia. It is available in some kind of smaller pockets of South Jersey and Northeast Philly, but for a person who lives in and around Center City, there aren't too, too many options," explains Lazor.

So, how's the food?

"There's a lot of cognates with Spanish. There has also been a large influx of Chinese immigrants to the country since the 18th century, so that kind of shows up in dishes like 'lumpia,' which is going to be on the menu on Monday, which is basically a spring roll."
