Weekend Box Office Report: 'Thor' Sequel Stays On Top
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Its box-office hammer was only half as powerful as it was last weekend, but the fantasy sequel, Thor: The Dark World, made it two first-place finishes in a row, earning an estimated $38-million on its second weekend of release.
Another sequel was the strong runnerup. The new ensemble comedy, The Best Man Holiday, debuted with an opening-weekend total of $31-million, easily surpassing the original's opening take.
Holdovers rounded out the top five: the comedy, Last Vegas, was third with $9-million; the animated Free Birds fourth with $8-million; and the prank comedy, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, fifth with under $8-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were well below those of a year ago, but an expected blockbuster – yet another sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – opens next weekend.
