UPDATE: Man Shot Outside South Street Bar Pronounced Dead

.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A man who was shot outside a South Street bar, following a fight inside the bar beforehand, has died, according to authorities.

Police say the altercation started just after 1:00 a.m. Sunday inside the Mixed Plate club along the 200 block of South Street in Society Hill.

The fight spilled out onto the street and responding officers were trying to break it up when someone opened fire.

"It was pretty much a mad house when we first came out here," said Captain Frank Llewellyn. "It is unbelievable nobody else was shot out here. The officers on the scene said they were ducking for cover."

According to police, the suspected gunman shot ten times into the crowd that gathered outside the bar before running away. Police arrested him just a few blocks away near Front and Bainbridge Streets. His weapon was recovered.

Police say the 21-year-old victim was shot multiple times in the face and neck. He was rushed to Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead just after 7:30 p.m Sunday.

"Its a shame that it happened," one resident who lives nearby said.

Police say the suspected gunman remains in custody. They say charges against him are likely to be upgraded to include homicide and related charges.

The shooting remains under investigation.
