Police: 14-Year-Old Attempts To Rob Taxi Driver At Gunpoint

CAMDEN, N.J., (CBS) -- Camden County Police say a 14-year-old has been arrested and charged for allegedly trying to rob a taxi driver at gunpoint Monday night.

According to police, an officer walking on a directed patrol addressing quality of life issues in Morgan Village was approached by the taxi driver.  The driver told the officer that four males had tried to rob him after he drove them to the rear of the Crestbury Apartments.

The taxi driver told police after the suspects exited the vehicle, a 14-year-old male approached the driver's side to pay as a distraction while another suspect allegedly drew a handgun and pointed it at the victim.

The alleged victim was able to drive away without giving any money to the suspects.

Based on a description given by the taxi driver, police say officers were able to locate the 14-year-old in the area and arrest him.

"Through our community policing efforts, having an officer walking in the neighborhood, we were able to quickly address this incident and make an arrest. We will continue to address quality of life issues throughout the city," said Chief J. Scott Thomson.

The suspect was charged with Robbery and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. He was remanded to the county juvenile detention facility at Lakeland.

The incident remains under investigation.
