Peco, Historic Philadelphia Prepare To Light Up Holiday Season In Franklin Square

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- At Franklin Square, PECO workers and volunteers were busy Tuesday getting the park ready for the holidays.

Franklin Square is best known as a summer tourist attraction -- with its carousel, miniature golf and a centerpiece water fountain. But now comes word that Historic Philadelphia is attempting to make it a destination spot right up through the beginning of winter.

Electrical Spectacle opens on Thursday and designer Greg Nelson says the main attraction is a seven minute light show.

"The design is a 20 foot kite structure which is going to light down through the kite string all the way to the bottom where there is a key," says Nelson. That is the idea of (Ben) Franklin inventing electricity and that will be a light show that comes up from the sky all the way down into the fountain where we will have lights as well underwater and all the surrounding trees."

The carousel will play holiday music and food trucks will be serving up comfort food, beverages and pastries.

Electrical Spectacle goes from 4:30-8 p.m. every night except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. It runs from November 14th through December31st.
