Motorcycle Chop Shop Uncovered In Philadelphia

By Al Novack

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police uncovered a Mayfair motorcycle chop shop quite unexpectedly, thanks to a theft tracking system and an off-duty cop's stolen motorcycle.

Investigators say the cop's cycle was equipped with a lo-jack theft tracking device that emits a radio signal.

A truck enforcement unit equipped with a lo-jack receiver was cruising the neighborhood in the 62-hundred block of Farnsworth Street when it picked up the signal from the officer's stolen bike.

When police raided the garage where the cycle's signal originated from, they recovered the officer's cycle, plus cycles that had been stolen in both Philadelphia and Bensalem.

Police say they also recovered parts from a disassembled bike.

Police did not make any arrests, and the operator or operators of the chop shop remain at large.
