Pa. Lt. Governor's Wife Will Forego $82,000 Security Detail

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor and his wife have decided to end most of her around-the-clock state police protection now that Suzanne Cawley's security detail has racked up more costs than his.
Chad Saylor, spokesman for Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley, says the governor, lieutenant governor, and their families have had state police security for 60 years. It became an issue for the Cawleys when Suzanne Cawley decided to return to fulltime work as a real estate agent in her native New York City earlier this year.
Saylor says the Cawleys had decided to allow troopers to accompany her between the Cawley home and her job in New York, costing Pennsylvania taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars.
"So they tried it, and they monitored the costs, and clearly, as a family, they looked at it and said, 'The costs are just too much here, this is something we need to take a look at.' And they ultimately decided to stop it."
Saylor says the Cawleys decided to drop the fulltime security detail when Suzanne Cawley's security costs approached $82,000 ($20,000 more than her husband's costs) from July 1st through October 2nd.
She will still be getting security from the Pennsylvania State Police for official events.
Lt. Gov. Cawley's current term as lieutenant governor expires next year.
