Weekend Box Office Review: Gravity Pulls Off Another Big Win
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Gravity continues to soar at multiplexes.
For the makers of Gravity, all was levity, as the science fiction drama with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney pulled in weekend moviegoers for a third straight strong first-place finish.
It earned an estimated $31-million.
That brings its cumulative total over the $170-million mark.
Another holdover, Captain Phillips, with Tom Hanks, took the runner up spot with just over $17-million.
Just behind it was the new horror remake, Carrie, with $17-million.
The weekend's two other new releases also placed in the top ten with modest returns: Escape Plan, with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, was fifth with just under $10-million.
The Wikileak's drama, The Fifth Estate, took in just under $2-million, good for an eighth-place finish. Overall, despite Gravity's success, industry-wide box office continued to struggle.
